Interested in learning to sew? Know someone who is?
There are lots of options for starting your journey to learning about the world of fashion design.
Ongoing group classes taught by Melissa take place at Staten Island Dance & Art Center for children 9-14 years old. The class is once per week for the school year, and ends with an exciting fashion show. In the class, students learn all about fashion- the hows and whys, what goes on in the fashion world, and lots of drawing to develop their own sense of style. They also learn to sew on machines- each student created her own head-to-toe look for the June show.
Group classes for special interest groups are available, including adult classes and home school groups. Email simplymelissy [at] gmail [dot] com for rates. Classes can take place in the studio in Tottenville, or in the group’s location, such as a church or library. Melissa can travel to all parts of Staten Island, as well as areas of New Jersey (Woodbridge, Perth Amboy), Brooklyn, and Manhattan. When inquiring, be sure to say where you’d like your class to be located for a quick and accurate estimate!
Private lessons are great for people with hectic schedules. They take place in the comfort of your own home, though lessons at the Studio are an option to! Melissa’s curriculum for gaining comfort and mastery with the sewing machine takes about a month (4 sessions)- make a bag, a skirt, and stuffed animal. After that, it is all up to the student- make Halloween costumes, toys, stylish clothes- you can’t get this kind of personalization in any other kind of setting!
